Gallatin River

The Gallatin River near Bozeman, Montana is one of Southwest Montana’s most scenic and rewarding trout fisheries. While it is smaller than many of the other rivers in the Bozeman area, the Gallatin offers a spectacular fly fishing experience with healthy populations of wild rainbow, brown, and native cutthroat trout.

Flowing from Yellowstone National Park through the dramatic canyon near Big Sky, Montana and into the Gallatin Valley, the river provides miles of classic freestone water filled with pocket water, riffles, and productive seams. The Gallatin is especially well known as a fantastic river for wade fishing, with easy access and plenty of opportunities to target trout with dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers.

Although the river fishes well throughout the year, we especially recommend fly fishing the Gallatin River in fall, winter, and early spring, when crowds are lighter and trout fishing near Bozeman can be incredibly productive.
